Hyper-Graph Based Database Partitioning for Transactional Workloads
نویسندگان
چکیده
A common approach to scaling transactional databases in practice is horizontal partitioning, which increases system scalability, high availability and self-manageability. Usually it is very challenging to choose or design an optimal partitioning scheme for a given workload and database. In this technical report, we propose a fine-grained hyper-graph based database partitioning system for transactional workloads. The partitioning system takes a database, a workload, a node cluster and partitioning constraints as input and outputs a lookup-table encoding the final database partitioning decision. The database partitioning problem is modeled as a multi-constraints hyper-graph partitioning problem. By deriving a min-cut of the hyper-graph, our system can minimize the total number of distributed transactions in the workload, balance the sizes and workload accesses of the partitions and satisfy all the partition constraints imposed. Our system is highly interactive as it allows users to impose partition constraints, watch visualized partitioning effects, and provide feedback based on human expertise and indirect domain knowledge for generating better partitioning schemes.

Scaling Up Mixed Workloads: A Battle of Data Freshness, Flexibility, and Scheduling
The common “one size does not fit all” paradigm isolates transactional and analytical workloads into separate, specialized database systems. Operational data is periodically replicated to a data warehouse for analytics. Competitiveness of enterprises today, however, depends on real-time reporting on operational data, necessitating an integration of transactional and analytical processing in a s...
متن کاملDistributed query execution system for Transactional Database using Lookup Table
As data volumes are incrementing rigorously, it is essential to store such large amount of data distributed across many machines. In OLTP databases, the most common strategy for scaling database workload is to horizontally partition the database using hash or range partitioning. It works well in many simple applications such as an email application. Transactions that access few tuples do not ru...
متن کاملScaling transactional workloads on the cloud
In this paper, we address the problem of transparently scaling out transactional (OLTP) workloads on relational databases, to support database-as-a-service in cloud computing environment. The primary challenges in supporting such workloads include choosing how to partition the data across a large number of machines, minimizing the number of distributed transactions, providing high data availabi...
متن کاملHermes: Dynamic Partitioning for Distributed Social Network Graph Databases
Social networks are large graphs that require multiple graph database servers to store and manage them. Each database server hosts a graph partition with the objectives of balancing server loads, reducing remote traversals (edge-cuts), and adapting the partitioning to changes in the structure of the graph in the face of changing workloads. To achieve these objectives, a dynamic repartitioning a...

This paper introduces a new transactional “database-as-a-service” (DBaaS) called Relational Cloud. A DBaaS promises to move much of the operational burden of provisioning, configuration, scaling, performance tuning, backup, privacy, and access control from the database users to the service operator, offering lower overall costs to users. Early DBaaS efforts include Amazon RDS and Microsoft SQL ...
